 Berkeley RFC Coaching Team

Berkeley RFC Head Coach Carlos Botto has been with BRFC since 2005 and has demonstrated a highly astute rugby brain, and a fondness for Steak Sandwiches. Carlos is in charge of BRFC strategy and direction and leading the coaching staff. With a lifetime of rugby experience playing in Argentina, a country that knows a few things about forward play, he has helped develop the BRFC scrum into one of the strongest in DIII in recent seasons. Under Carlos, a man well versed in the dark arts of the scrum, BRFC forward play has become a force to be reckoned with. Carlos fills in his non-rugby hours as a Software Engineer. Coach Mark Larsen is a former BRFC player who is a master exponent of front row play. In recent seasons he has been playing upper division and SuperLeague rugby. Now in his third season in the BRFC coaching role, he unleashes his wide repertoire of skills and drills to keep our training seasons interesting, focused and effective. With a focus on our play at the breakdowns, Mark sharpens our match vision, deconstructs and repairs weakness in our match play and develops the flow of our game. Tackling is another a major focus for Mark, and he is not afraid to lead by example during training. Like all New Zealand rugby players, he burst from the womb with rugby ball in hand, and has decades of rugby experience under his belt. Just be warned if Canterbury/The Crusaders ever lose, we will be in for an intense training session the next week.

Coach Ryan Luis is another former BRFC player, and has also played DI and SuperLeague rugby for NorCal clubs in recent years. His prior coaching experience includes four seasons with St Mary's Woman's rugby, and is also rapidly advancing up the Referee society ranks.  While wearing the BRFC coaching hat he will be focused on new player development and raising the overall onfield rugby knowledge. Ryan will take charge of the lineout, and will work to develop the continuity and link play of the whole team early in the season. He also takes a sadistic pleasure in fitness drills.

Support coach Justin Ryan is a Kiwi, and a rugby man through and through. With many years of playing the great game under his belt him, he has also stepped in to help optimize our backline. With the second highest points-scored in the league in 2010, he has helped them coalesce into a potent attacking force.
